What the transfer belt actually does

Signal 2: background density
Print a solid black or solid cyan fill on plain 80 gsm. A healthy belt gives a clean, even field. An aging belt leaves a faint gray haze, the "background," because it clings to toner it should have released. A densitometer reads it; your eye estimates it.
The 0.5 background level is our shop rule, not an HP spec. Your paper, your densitometer, and your room will move it a notch. Treat it as a tripwire, not a verdict.
Signal 3: color misregistration
Print a registration target with thin CMYK lines. Measure the offset between, say, the cyan and black bars. A stretched or slipping belt opens that gap. Above roughly 1.5 mm at a 200 dpi target, color edges look soft and text gets a colored fringe.
This one fails slowly. Catch it at 1 mm and you still print clean; wait for visible fringing and the belt has been drifting for weeks.
Three myths that burn money
"Wait for streaks." By the time you see streaks, the belt has been shedding toner unevenly for thousands of pages. Measuring background density catches it while output still looks fine.
"Replace on a calendar." A quiet office M452 may do 5k pages a year; a busy one does 40k. Same calendar, eight times the wear. Count pages, not months.
"Clean means good." A belt can look spotless and still have climbed resistivity or micro-stretch you cannot see. The measurable signals are the only honest check.
How we do it in the shop
