FOR Epson Paper Jam: Which Door to Open and Why It Returns

Updated: 2026-10-29. A FOR Epson paper jam on a WorkForce Enterprise (WF-C17590, WF-C20590, WF-M20590) or a WorkForce Pro (WF-C5790) does not show one generic message. The screen names the exact door, cover, or duplexer where the sheet stopped, then waits for you to open it. That label is a location, not a verdict.

Most repeat jams after you clear the visible sheet come back because a worn pickup or separation roller keeps feeding crooked, or a small torn fragment is still sitting on the paper detector. This guide maps each Epson jam label to the part that actually causes it, and to the roller you should replace instead of the whole printer.

What you'll fix

  • How Epson names a jam (door, cover, unit)
  • The real reason jams return after you clear them
  • A six-step clear-and-verify routine
  • When the culprit is a worn roller, not a ghost
  • Which Epson feed parts we stock and fit

How Epson names a jam

Epson's own Enterprise service manual labels jams by module. On the WF-C17590 family it points you to the J door, the Front Door (L), the Duplexer (D1), and the Register Unit that carries the Pre-Register Paper Detector and the Pre-Printing Sensor. Sibling Epson manuals use plain language too: Cover D, Cover E, Cover F, Unit G for the cassette, internal path, duplex inverter, and duplex main unit.

The roller wore out.

The screen says "Paper Jam, Open J Door" because that is where the sheet stopped. It never says "replace the roller," and that silence is the part most people miss. HP takes a different route and prints a numeric 13.XX instead, which (as we covered in the HP 13.XX jam guide) is also just a location report. Both brands tell you where. Neither tells you why it will happen again.

An Epson paper jam that returns after you clear it is almost never the door. It is the roller behind the door.

The real reason jams return

Two causes explain almost every repeat Epson paper jam on these machines. The first is a worn feed roller in the tray or ADF. Rubber loses grip, the sheet skews or double-feeds, and the sensor flags a jam at the next checkpoint. The second is a missed fragment -- a torn corner left on the Pre-Register Paper Detector or the Pre-Printing Sensor on the Register Unit. The printer is not wrong. It still sees paper.

Epson jam label Where to open Most likely cause First action before ordering
J door / Cover D (cassette) Paper cassette cover Worn tray pickup or separation roller Clean path, then replace roller kit
Front Door L / Cover E Internal paper path Torn fragment on Pre-Register detector Remove all bits, clean the sensor
Duplexer D1 / Cover F / Unit G Duplex path Duplex feed wear or trapped fragment Clear path, inspect duplex rollers
ADF / code 100054 (WF-C5790) Document feed path ADF pickup or separation wear Clear ADF, replace ADF roller

The sensor still sees paper.

Code 100054 is the one numeric case worth naming: on the WF-C5790 the ADF path throws "ADF/SCN ERROR (7), Paper jam error (error code: 100054)" when a sheet jams in the document feeder. Same root causes, different door.

Clear and verify in six steps

1. Turn the printer off. Epson manuals warn against pulling jammed paper while the unit is powered, because a moving part can grab your hand or tear the sheet.
2. Open the named door or cover. Pull the sheet with both hands. Never yank; a torn corner is what creates the next jam.
3. Check every tray and the duplexer for fragments, not just the one the screen named.

Steps 4 to 6 finish the clear:

Clean the Pre-Register Paper Detector and the Pre-Printing Sensor on the Register Unit. A fingerprint or dust keeps the flag live.
Reseat the rollers. A loose roller lets the sheet skew on the next run.
Power on. A clean sensor clears the ghost jam without a single part ordered.

Free checks first. Paid parts last.

When it's a worn roller, not a ghost

The pattern is the tell. One Epson paper jam after a misfeed is normal. Jams that cluster at the same tray, skew the sheet, or show up every few hundred pages point at the roller. Pickup and separation rollers are wear parts; they do not last the life of the machine.

I earlier wrote "replace at around 100k pages" for HP trays. For the Epson Enterprise feed rollers I would be guessing that number, because Epson does not publish a single lifespan rating for this line, and paper weight changes it. Treat clustering jams as the signal, not a page counter.

Replacing the whole printer over a $10 roller is the expensive mistake we see most. The roller is the scene of the crime. It is usually the criminal too.

Parts that fit your Epson

We stock the Epson pickup roller family that fits the WF-C5390, M5399, M5899, and C5890 class machines, and the catalog of Epson-compatible pickup rollers keeps growing. For the WorkForce Enterprise WF-C17590 / C20590 / M20590 / M21000 we currently carry the transfer belt, and if your unit also throws the belt write error we documented the Epson belt error 301/304 fix separately.

The C12C938261 pickup roller shares the same wear principle and is the part most Enterprise owners reach for once jams cluster. If your machine keeps jamming, most Epson paper jam calls we handle end at a worn roller, not the door.

We do not yet list a pickup roller cut exactly for the WF-C17590 tray, and I will not pretend otherwise. The fit table below reflects our current catalog, not a promise that one roller covers every regional variant.

Machine family Feed part we stock Notes
WF-C5390 / M5399 / M5899 / C5890 C12C938261 pickup roller Direct fit
WF-C17590 / C20590 / M20590 / M21000 Transfer belt (4-78) Pickup roller not yet listed
Any Epson feed issue Pickup-Roller category Browse current stock

If your Enterprise keeps jamming and the belt is fine, the Epson maintenance box alert is a different fault entirely and worth ruling out before you chase paper paths.

FAQ

What does "Paper Jam, Open J Door" mean on a WF-C17590?
It means a sheet stopped in the cassette-area door the manual labels J. Open that door, pull the sheet with both hands, and check for torn fragments. The label names a location only; it does not say which part failed, so a returning jam usually points at the tray pickup or separation roller.

Why does the jam message stay after I removed the paper?
Because a small torn piece is still on the Pre-Register Paper Detector or the Pre-Printing Sensor on the Register Unit. The printer is reading paper that you cannot see. Power off, open the path, clean both sensors, and the message clears without any part ordered.

Is Epson error 100054 a paper jam?
Yes. On the WF-C5790 the ADF throws "ADF/SCN ERROR (7), Paper jam error (error code: 100054)" when an original jams in the document feeder. Clear the ADF path, then watch for repeat jams that signal worn ADF pickup or separation rollers rather than a one-off misfeed.

How do I tell a worn roller from a one-off jam?
One jam after a misfeed is normal. Jams that cluster at the same tray, skew or double-feed the sheet, or return every few hundred pages indicate roller wear. Pickup and separation rollers are consumable; they lose grip long before the printer retires, so clustering is your signal.

Can I keep printing through a recurring jam?
You can, but each pass risks a torn fragment lodging deeper or scraping the Register Unit sensors. A recurring Epson paper jam is cheap to fix with a roller and expensive to ignore. Clear it properly, confirm the sensors are clean, and replace the worn roller before it damages surrounding parts.

Methodology, References & Caveats

This Epson paper jam guide draws on Epson's own documentation. The door and cover labels in it come from the Enterprise service manual, which names the J door, Front Door (L), Duplexer (D1) and the Register Unit sensors, and Epson's published manuals label jams by cover and unit (Cover D/E/F/G, Unit G). Epson's own paper-jam procedure confirms the power-off, two-hands, no-yank steps, and the WF-C5790 support note documents the 100054 ADF code.

Two caveats. Epson does not publish a single feed-roller lifespan rating for the WorkForce Enterprise line, so any page number you see online is a guess; clustering Epson paper jam episodes are the only reliable signal. And our parts table reflects the catalog we stock today, not a fit guarantee for every regional variant of these machines. For any Epson paper jam that keeps returning, start with the roller.
