For businesses that rely on scanning stacks of documents, a faulty ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) is a major bottleneck. But instead of replacing your entire printer (or overpaying for a new ADF), our factory team has refined a process to refurbish and install ADF units that work like new—here’s how to do it yourself:
- Disassemble the old ADF:Unplug your printer, open the ADF cover (usually the top lid), and remove the screws holding the feeder assembly to the printer base. Gently lift the ADF unit out (note the cable connections—take a photo to avoid miswiring later).
- Refurbish core components:Our factory trick? Replace the worn pickup rollers (the rubber bits that grip paper) and clean the sensor lenses (use a lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol—dust here causes misfeeds). We source OEM-compatible rollers for our refurbished ADFs, so they grip consistently.
- Reassemble the ADF:Reattach the new rollers to the feeder mechanism, wipe down the paper path, and snap the ADF casing back together. Check that the paper guides move smoothly (adjust them to fit standard 8.5x11 paper if needed).
- Reinstall the ADF:Line up the ADF unit with the printer’s mounting points, reconnect the cables (match your photo), and secure with screws. Close the cover and plug the printer back in.
- Test for reliability:Load 10 sheets of paper into the ADF tray, run a scan-to-PDF test—if all pages scan without jams or skewing, your refurbished ADF is ready.
We’ve refurbished hundreds of ADF units for HP, Xerox, and Canon printers—each one undergoes a 10-point feed test to ensure it handles 50+ pages at a time. For bulk orders, we include a free ADF maintenance kit (rollers + cleaning supplies).
