A document feeder that grabs two sheets at once, or drags a black line down every scan, is almost never broken beyond repair. Why the ADF fails before the printer does

The print engine sees paper once. The feeder sees every original you scan, including recycled stock, receipts, and pages that sat in a filing cabinet for a decade. Paper dust, toner, and the clay coating from glossy sheets all collect on the pickup roller and the separation pad, and the pad loses grip first.

That is why an ADF can jam on page five of a scan job while the same printer prints hundreds of pages without a hiccup. The two mechanisms share a chassis and nothing else.

Is it the ADF or the flatbed

Before ordering anything, separate the fault. Scan one page on the flatbed, then scan the same page through the feeder.

• **Flatbed is clean, feeder is streaked.** The mark comes from the ADF scan strip or the white pressure plate, both easy to clean.

The four wear points inside an ADF

Nearly every ADF, from a desktop MFPs to a floor-standing copier, reduces to these four.

• **Pickup roller.** Drops onto the top sheet and pulls it in. Glazed, shiny rubber here means delayed feed or a feed error at the start of the job.
• **Separation pad or separation roller.** Presses against the pickup roller and holds the rest of the stack back. This is the part that fails into multi-feeds and doubles.
• **Feed and exit rollers.** Carry the sheet through the curved path. Worn here shows as skew, a page that exits at an angle, or a jam in the middle of the path.
• **Scan strip glass and white pressure plate.** A fingerprint or a speck of correction fluid on the narrow glass strip prints as a vertical black line on every scan.

The pad and the pickup roller wear as a pair. Replacing one and leaving a glazed partner in place usually brings the multi-feed back within a few weeks.

Skew usually points at the feed rollers rather than the pad, which is the one mix-up I see most in support tickets. A pad that is worn makes the machine pull extra sheets, not crooked ones.

A ten-minute cleaning routine

Do this before you buy a kit. I have cleared a good share of "broken" feeders this way.

1. Power off and open the ADF cover so the rollers are reachable.
2. Wipe the pickup roller and the feed rollers with a lint-free cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Let them dry to a dull, not glossy, finish.
3. Wipe the separation pad on the same pass. If it looks polished or has a groove worn into it, cleaning will only buy you days.
4. Clean the narrow scan strip glass with a dry lens cloth. Do not spray liquid onto the glass.
5. Wipe the white pressure plate opposite the strip. A gray haze here mimics a streak from the glass.
6. Fan the stack before loading, and set the side guides so the paper cannot shift.

If jams persist after a clean, the pad has glazed past the point of recovery. That is a replacement, not a cleaning.

When to replace instead of clean

Replace the pad and pickup roller together when you see any of these: doubles during an unattended batch, a feed error on more than one job in a week, or a pad with a visible groove. For feeders that also throw a control fault or refuse to run at all, the problem has left the mechanical path. Why does my ADF pull two or three pages at once?
The separation pad or separation roller has lost grip, so it cannot hold the rest of the stack back. Replace the pad and the matching pickup roller together.

How do I stop black lines on every scanned page?
Scan one page on the flatbed. If the line is gone, clean the ADF scan strip and the white pressure plate. If it stays, the mark is on the drum or belt, not the feeder.

Can I clean an ADF roller with water?
