Laser Printer Streaks? Fuser, Belt, or Drum: Which One Failed
Your laser printer streaks and you cannot tell which part is guilty. Nine times out of ten the cause is the fuser, the transfer belt, or the drum, not the toner. This FAQ walks through a 60-second triage you can run before ordering anything. Updated: 2026-09-11.

A 60-second triage before you order
Print a diagnosis page first. Most engines hide it under Reports, Device, or Configuration.
Look at one repeating defect and ask where it sits on the sheet. A mark that repeats every full drum turn is one problem; a faint ghost of a previous page is another. The two never share a part, so the interval alone narrows it down.
Do not swap the toner.
Toner rarely causes streaks on its own. It rides on top of whatever the fuser, belt, or drum did underneath. Blaming toner first is the most expensive mistake in this whole job, because it leaves the real fault running while you burn through cartridges.
Symptom-to-part: the table that ends the guess
This is the table I keep taped inside the service van. Match the symptom, read the likely part, run the one test that confirms it.

One interval to memorize: a drum repeats its defect once per revolution, a fuser roughly every 70 to 80 mm, a belt closer to 90 to 100 mm. Measure the gap between two identical marks with a ruler and the part name falls out.
Fuser faults (the hot half)
The fuser melts toner onto paper with heat and pressure. When it is the culprit, the damage looks like heat damage.
Ghosting is the classic call. A faint, lighter copy of what you printed two inches up the page means the hot roller is carrying toner around and redepositing it. Cleaning will not fix it. The fuser unit catalog lists the hot-roller and film-sleeve options we stock for most engines.
Unfused toner is the other fuser signature. If print rubs off like chalk dust, the fuser never reached fusing temperature. That can be a film-sleeve tear, a bad thermistor, or simply the wrong voltage unit.
A self-correction: I first wrote "wrinkles mean the belt." That is wrong more often than right. On every engine we service, creased paper traces to the pressure roller or a torn fuser exit guide, never the transfer belt. I changed the triage table above to say so.
Model note: HP 1020, Canon LBP2900, Konica C250i
The HP 1020 fuser unit and its Canon LBP2900 twin run a film-sleeve fuser that cracks after years of idle heat. On the Konica Minolta Bizhub C250i fuser, pick the 110V or 220V unit to match your region. A 220V sleeve on 110V mains will not reach fusing temp and you will see exactly the chalk-dust symptom above.
Transfer belt faults (the color half)
The intermediate transfer belt carries each color into register. When it drifts, color drifts with it.
Misregistration is the belt's tell. Solid fills show banding; text stays sharp but color edges sit a hair off. A cartridge swap will not move those edges back, because the cartridge never set the registration, the belt did.
Repeating marks at ~94 mm point at a scratched belt surface. This is different from a drum scratch: the belt mark survives a full set of fresh drums. On the HP Color LaserJet M452 and M477 family, a worn HP M452 transfer belt throws cyan and magenta out of line long before the end-of-life counter fires.
One honest caveat: humidity does odd things to belts in tropical offices. We have seen belts go slack a year early in high-heat rooms, though I cannot pin an exact failure threshold from our own logs yet. Treat the rated yield as a dry-climate number.
Drum faults (the black-streak half)
A scratched OPC drum leaves a solid black line that repeats once per revolution. On many color engines that revolution is about 94 mm, so the line spacing matches the belt by coincidence, and people blame the belt.
The fast confirm is a single-drum swap. Pull one color drum, reprint, and watch whether the streak moves with that drum or stays put. If it stays, go back to the belt section.
Another caveat: a brand-new drum can streak on its first hundred pages if the protective sleeve was pulled at an angle and dragged toner across the surface. Give a new drum a short warm-up before you write it off.

A second caveat on voltage: Fuji Xerox P355 ships in 110V and 220V builds. The Fuji Xerox P355 fuser you fit must match your wall. Mismatched voltage reads like a belt fault on the page but the real cause is the fuser never heating right.
What I check first
Order of attack, cheapest confirm to most expensive:
- Print the diagnosis page. Note the defect interval with a ruler.
- Swap one drum if the mark repeats per revolution. Cheapest part, fastest answer.
- Run color registration if edges are off. Belt, not toner.
- Inspect the fuser film and pressure roller last, because those are the costlier swaps.
Most calls end at step two.
The rest end at the belt. Genuine belts are rated near 140,000 pages under light coverage, but heavy color shops fall short of that. Plan the belt as a budget line, not a surprise.
FAQ
How do I know if streaks are from the fuser or the transfer belt?
Fuser streaks show as ghosting or unfused toner that smears under a finger; transfer belt faults throw colors out of register. Run a color registration page. If colors shift but text stays sharp, blame the belt. If toner rubs off, the fuser never fused it. Measure the repeat interval to be sure.
Why are my prints wrinkled near the edge?
Wrinkles almost always point at the fuser pressure roller, not the belt. A hard spot or debris on the roller scores the sheet as it passes the heat. On HP 1020 and Canon LBP2900 units this shows up after long idle periods in humid rooms, when the sleeve and guide stick together.
Can a worn drum cause black vertical lines?
