A printer that jams once is annoying. A printer that jams every third sheet is telling you something specific broke. The fix is almost never "clean it and hope." It is finding the one part that stopped gripping, feeding, or releasing paper.

This guide works the way a bench tech actually does: by *where* the paper stops, not by guessing.

60-second triage by jam location

Pull the jammed sheet out slowly and look at where it was stuck. That single observation removes half the guesswork.

  • **Jam at the paper tray mouth.** Paper never made it past the first roller. Blame the pickup roller or separation pad.
  • **Jam mid-path, before the fuser.** A sensor flag is stuck, or a roller in the path has gone smooth.
  • **Jam at or just after the fuser.** The fuser is too hot, too cold, or the exit roller has failed. Paper wraps around the heat roller.
  • **Jam only through the ADF.** The document feeder, not the printer engine. Different parts entirely.

I changed how I wrote this section after a reader pointed out the obvious: most "jamming" complaints are really "jams at one spot." Location first, part second.

1. Pickup roller lost its grip

The pickup roller is the rubber tire that pulls the top sheet off the stack. After roughly 50,000 to 100,000 pages it glazes over and starts slipping. You hear the motor whir, the paper twitches, and nothing feeds.

On the FOR HP M608 and M607 family this shows up first in tray 1, because that roller sees the most single-sheet pulls. The B5L24-67905 pickup and separation kit replaces the tire and the roller together, which is the right move. Do not swap one and leave the other.

A caveat I should flag: humidity changes grip too. In a dry office the same roller that jammed all winter may feed fine in August. If the roller still has visible texture, try a damp cloth before you order.

2. Separation pad is worn

This is the part most people forget. The separation pad sits opposite the pickup roller and stops the second sheet from riding along. When it flattens, you get *double feeds* (two sheets at once), which then jam in the path.

Double feeding is rarely the pickup roller's fault. I cannot pin the cause from "it jams" alone; the tell is specifically two sheets entering together. Once the pad is shiny and compressed, a new one is the only fix. Pads are cheap and almost always ship inside the pickup kit.

3. Fuser is grabbing or wrapping paper

The fuser bonds toner with heat and pressure. If the exit rollers harden, or the film sleeve cracks, paper does not leave cleanly and wraps around the heat roller. You then pull out a torn, scorched sheet.

This is the jam you do not force. Tearing paper inside the fuser leaves fragments that jam again next job. Let it cool, open the fuser, and remove the wrap in one piece.

On the Brother MFC-L8900 and similar upright engines, a wrapper like this usually means the fuser exit roller set, not the whole fuser. The laser printer pickup rollers category lists the related feed parts, but the fuser exit set is its own order. Check the fuser page for your model before assuming the engine is dead.

4. Paper path sensors and flags

Inside the paper path are small mylar flags that tell the printer "paper is here." If one breaks or sticks, the firmware throws a jam code even when no paper is present, or it stops feeding mid-path.

These are mechanical, not electronic. I have seen a torn scrap of label stock hold a flag down for weeks. Open the path, look for a flagged sensor that does not spring back, and clear it. No part needed if nothing is broken.

5. ADF feed (document jams, not paper)

If only the *scanner* jams when you copy or scan, that is the ADF, not the printer engine. The ADF has its own pickup and separation rollers, sized for thin document paper.

The ADF roller sets are a separate consumable from the tray rollers. Multi-sheet document feeding fails first; single-sheet usually still works. That split is the fastest way to confirm it is the ADF and not the engine.

Honest limit: I have not handled every regional build of these models, and a few share a chassis with slight roller changes. If your jam spot does not match the table, the part number on the old roller is the source of truth.

Self-check before you order

1. Note the exact jam location, not just "it jams."
2. Pull one sheet out and confirm single vs double feed.
3. Rotate the pickup roller: textured means clean first, glazed means replace.
4. Check the separation pad for shine and compression.
5. If it wraps at the fuser, inspect the exit roller, not the whole engine.
6. ADF-only jams are a different part family. Do not touch the engine rollers.

FAQ

Q: Is the pickup roller or the separation pad causing my jam?
A: Single-sheet stop at the tray mouth is the pickup roller. Two sheets entering together is the separation pad. The test is the feed behavior, not the error code.

Q: Can I just clean the rollers instead of replacing them?
A: If the rubber still has texture, a damp lint-free cloth often restores grip, especially after a humid spell. Once the surface is glazed or cracked, cleaning will not bring it back.

Q: Why does paper wrap around the fuser?
A: The fuser exit rollers have hardened or the film sleeve cracked, so paper is not pulled out fast enough and the heat roller grabs it. Let it cool and remove the wrap in one piece.

Q: My printer shows a jam but there is no paper inside. What now?
A: A stuck or broken paper-path sensor flag is the usual cause. Find the flag that does not spring back and clear any debris; no part is needed unless the flag is broken.

Q: ADF jams but printing from the tray is fine. Same fix?
A: No. The ADF has its own feed rollers for document paper. Multi-sheet document feeding fails first while single-sheet still works, which confirms it is the ADF set, not the engine.
